Music project of KS 3

To celebrate St. Cecilia day, (the patron saint of music) and with a view to encouraging the students to develop an interest in music away from the classroom, we instigated last term a competition to build a musical instrument.
Everyone was invited to compete and was given a completely free hand to make whatever instrument they wished.  We even had a number of children inventing their own!
We thought it a good idea to develop this theme to include the artistic elements of construction and the competition became a joint music and art project.
The children were allowed to work in groups of up to three per instrument, but in the end many of the instruments were the work of individual students.
What resulted exceeded the expectations of all of us, not only was there a terrific variety of instrument types, but many of the instruments worked and a number of them even played in tune!
